Q. How much mulch do I need?

A.  This is a very common question for homeowners who haven’t given much thought to their mulch needs.

Q&A IconTo answer the question, you need to consider two factors:

  • The square footage of your gardens
  • The depth of mulch for each garden

Square footage

Go out to your yard and measure the width and length of each garden.  Don’t worry if you have round gardens. You can still measure them by width and length.

For each garden, multiple the width x the length.  For example, 8 feet x 10 feet = 80 square feet.

Do this for each garden and then add up the square footage for all of your gardens.

Mulch depth

How much depth you should have is a personal decision.

It generally ranges from 1 inch to 4 inches.

But consider the fact that other than appearance, mulch can also help you control weed growth and maintain moisture in your soil.

Too little mulch and you may not stop weed growth.  Too much mulch could lock in too much moisture.
